We have worked out some local routes linking our participating inns, as follows. Combine the routes to create rides as short and local or as long and scenic as you like. Your luggage will be transported for you, and you and your bikes will be carried across any bridges where cycling is not allowed.
Northern Route: Tappahannock and Northern Neck wine trails
Spend two nights at the wonderfully situated Essex Inn, in the heart of historic Tappahannock. You may eat in local restaurants and experience sumptuous B & B breakfasts. Your hosts, Melodie and Reeves will happily deliver you, with your bikes, across the bridge spanning the Rappahannock River so you are then able to enjoy in comfort the wine area of the Northern neck on your bikes. They have a suggested area for you to follow to make the most of your wine tours.
Northeastern Route
Visit Reedville and Kilmarnock. Reedville boasts the lovely Fleeton Fields B & B. Take in a couple of days seeing the Reedville Fisherman's Museum in Reedville, then wander picturesque coves and waterside, taking an evening meal in a quaint local restaurant. You may then move on to Kilmarnock, which is a superb little town with much to see, staying at the beautifully appointed Kilmarnock Inn and exploring the quaint High Street town and beautiful coves.
Southwestern Route
Begin your tour of the Southwestern Route in Church View. Stay here a night or two and circle the country lanes. Enjoy the old farmhouse atmosphere of the Dragon Run Inn, and then for your next destination enjoy a night or two in the historic and quaint town of Urbanna which nestles into the shores of the Rappahannock closer to the Chesapeake Bay. There are two Inns here, Atherston Hall and Inn at Urbanna Creek, both in town and yet local to all that happens with delightful restaurants, cute antique stores and the waterside to wander around. A night or two here and move on to your next location.
Eastern Route
On the eastern tip of the Middle Peninsula, you find the town known as Deltaville. Here there are two B & B's to supply you with splendid hospitality and good eats: Heaven Scent B & B which is a garden property off the main road (in the Hardyville district), and Sanderling House (in Deltaville itself) which is a waterfront property with its own marina. There are several restaurants and fishing, sailing or power boating to tempt you out onto the water. Visit the Maritime Museum here with Holly Point Nature Park and bike our uncluttered leafy lanes all the way out to Stingray Point, or head west to the other beaches at Wake. There are several restaurants in the town serving delicious local fresh catch fare.
Southern Route
From Deltaville, you might like to cycle the road to Mathews County and the town of Mathews, which is approximately 20 miles. In Mathews County there are two Inns, Buckley Hall in Mathews and Sycamore Haven 5 miles to the south in Susan. Such a very charming area and already bicycle friendly! Good restaurants await you and interesting waterside along country lanes.
