DIY - Who Do You Think You Are?

8/29/2011 Ancestry.com offers a free week of access to their online records.

Have you seen some of these TV episodes where celebrities' ancestors are traced? You can do the same for yourself. Our area is rich in history and historical records. You can start your research online: Ancestry.com is offering free access now through Labor Day. If your path leads you to Virginia, continue your searches in person at some of the historical courthouses within easy reach of our member inns. Fall is a great time to enjoy the country roads as well as to set aside some research time, and you may well produce charts or narratives that will make unbeatable family holiday presents.

Goodnight, Irene

8/29/2011

The hurricane has passed, and we can report all members remain open! There have been some power outages, as for Dragon Run Inn, Fleeton Fields and Inn at Warner Hall, but they are all operating with generators until power is restored (expected between Tuesday and Friday this week). As always, our member inns are ready to offer hospitality and comfort. See our Inns list, call or use the online booking links: we are all in shape to show you a Better Way to Stay!

Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail Expands

8/15/2011 Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail

More wineries have opened here around the Bay! There are two wineries between the Bay and Richmond: Saudé Creek just west of West Point, and New Kent Winery. On the Northern Neck, White Fences in Irvington closed temporarily and then reopened as Hope and Glory Vineyard, with The Dog and Oyster logo. Good Luck Cellars opened July 2011 in nearby Kilmarnock, and Jacey's Winery in Wicomico Church is another newcomer not far from Athena Vineyards. Further up the Northern Neck, near Hague and Kinsale you'll find Vault Field Vineyards, the Hague Winery, and General's Ridge Vineyards along the way to the well-established trio of Belle Mount, Oak Crest and Ingleside. Book one of our bed and breakfasts and enjoy your tours!

We're Turning Green

1/1/2009 Passionate about preserving our environment

Since the pilot launch in 2006, Virginia Green has taken off, and has been endorsed by the BBAV. Passionate about the environment, six of our regional member inns have been certified for the Virginia Green Lodging program. Look for the logo in our directory of member inns. Virginia Green is a partnership between the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC), the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association (VHTA). DEQ is responsible for Virginia Green certification. Certified businesses commit to voluntary, waste-reducing activities such as recycling, optional linen service, water and energy conservation, green cleaning, purchasing environmentally friendly products and other steps that help reduce harmful environmental effects.

40 Trips for 40 Years

1/23/2009 Virginia Is For B & B Lovers

The slogan "Virginia is for Lovers" has reached its 40th year of heralding that whatever a person most loves about a vacation, whatever passion one has, Virginia is the ideal destination. To mark the anniversary, the Virginia Tourism Corporation is running a sweepstakes, giving away a trip a week for 40 weeks. Our Chesapeake Bay Region of the BBAV is proud to announce that our new three-night package, "Rainbow Chaser," has been selected as one of the prize vacations. "Rainbow" emphasizes that there is a full spectrum of delights in our region: to suggest a single theme - such as sailing, kayaking, fishing, winery tours, antiquing, golf, art studio tours, art workshops, bird watching, gardens, genealogy, history or architecture - would be far too narrow. Live Passionately! and spend your vacations with us. You'll find details on our Specials page and can enter the sweepstakes on the VTC site.
